“Are you ready?” Marcus asked quietly two days later, his hand on Eve’s front door. “I want us to make it home before it starts snowing again.”

Eve glanced up at Marcus standing in the darkened foyer. His face was in shadow but she didn’t need light to see him. Those strong features were etched in her memory forever. Everything about him was imprinted on her consciousness, on her senses, on her skin, and would be until the day she died.

This was the first time she was leaving her house since the attack. Marcus had insisted that she needed the time to recover and he’d been right. She finally felt fully herself again.

He’d stayed by her side constantly. Three times a day, a small dark good-looking man named Jorge delivered box after box of mysterious goods, plus exquisitely prepared food and a selection of the finest wines. Marcus had insisted on feeding her himself. He’d been right there whenever she needed something. She’d almost forgotten what it was to feed herself, to bathe herself, to dress herself. For the first time in her life she’d had someone to take care of her.

She’d been utterly pampered and loved from head to toe, over and over again. He’d used only his hands and mouth while telling her, in excruciating detail, just how he would take her completely once they were in his house. She shivered at the memory.

He glanced at her out of midnight eyes. “Cold, love?” he rumbled. “Maybe I can do something about that.”

He reached down to one of the magic boxes Jorge had delivered and pulled up the sealing tape. He unfolded the flaps and pulled out something soft and blue. A flick of his hand and it billowed out—a rich silvery blue oversized cashmere coat by Valentino. He held it up. “Here, try it on.”

Stunned, Eve shrugged into it, her fingers lingering over the lushly soft material. It came to mid-calf and enveloped her in soft folds of warmth.

“Marcus,” she breathed. She brushed her hand down a sleeve. She’d never had anything as fine as this in her whole life. “Oh, I can’t possibly—”

“Now, love.” Marcus started buttoning the coat up. “I hope you’re not going to say something silly like you can’t accept it. Not when I sent poor Jorge all over town yesterday looking for exactly the right coat because it wasn’t available online. And then I had to listen to him complaining bitterly that shopping isn’t in his job description. He told me in no uncertain terms that I owe him, big time. So, after all of that, you’re not going to refuse it are you?”

Eve smiled up at him and sighed. She pulled the collar of her coat around her neck, her fingers lingering over the soft material. “I guess I can’t. But it’s a very…extravagant gift. I don’t know what to say.”

“Try ‘thank you,’” he suggested, taking her hands.

“Thank you.”

“You’re very welcome.” He smiled one of his rare smiles, lifting her hand to his mouth.
